One of Minnesota's finest jewels lies on the Mississippi River. Red Wing, Minnesota may be visited winter or summer for plenty of history and things to do.

Red Wing, Minnesota may be found at the south side of Mud Lake, next to Pierce Lake, where highway 61 and 58 North cross. It has its own airport if one wants to travel in small planes, and St Paul is roughly an hour away by highway. Apparently, it splits two counties, Goodhue and Pierce, but if the purpose of your visit is tourism, no need to worry about taxes.

Red Wing's oldest hotel, the St James, opened its doors to visitors in 1875 and has been hosting Red Wing guests since. The town sits along the Mississippi River route that the classic highway 61 runs along. There are approximately 16000 people and men are a little less in demand than women, but overall its about a fifty/fifty share, give or take a few tourists.

What is Red Wing Famous For?

Red Wing boots started being manufactured and sold by a Mr. Charles Beckman in 1905 and Red Wing is still selling boots today. One of the traditional values of this American company is service. Boots bought at Red Wing stores will be taken care of for life. Any Red Wing boot can be brought in by the original owner and get cleaned up, relaced and have the eyelets retacked for whatever reason. This service perspective makes them unique in that they won't sell their boot or shoe directly to you online. Why? They think its best that your foot get measured and that you try the boot on. Whether a person wears Red Wings or not, good shoes are required for the opportunities in Red Wing.

Activities in Red Wing

To begin with, Red Wing is a member of Explore Mississippi Bluffs, along with Lake City, Wabasha, Winona, and Lanesboro. Explore Mississippi Bluffs is a way for the five towns to unite in providing tourist services along the Mississippi and maintaining historical sites. There are places to water ski and take boat trips. A person can hike or canoe, drink coffee, bird watch, antique shop, read a book, or snuggle in the hotel room in the afternoon, only to be drug out early to catch some of the best fish in the country.

Watch the waters when fishing on the mighty Mississippi, as old time paddle boats still come and dock at Red Wing's shores. For winter fun, a visitor may snow shoe or cross country ski, snow mobile or sit by the fire. The fall has gorgeous colors on the trees and Red Wings activities will adapt to the beautiful seasons it endures. The town is surrounded by farms and craftsman that may provide fresh food and goods to purchase.

Young or old, speedy or slow, everyone should meander the Mississippi banks to Red Wing, pull up a chair after a day in the country, breaking in some fine hiking boots, and sit a while to talk about the wildlife and things they observed.
